What’s Missing from Your Google Business Profile?
Make Your Business Details Count
Your Google Business Profile might be doing the bare minimum: showing your hours, phone number and a link to your website. Helpful? Yeah. The full picture of your business? Probably not.
When someone finds you on Google, they’re often trying to answer a few quick questions: Do you offer what I need? Can you help me where I am? How do I get started? Your profile should make those answers easy to find.
We see businesses skip the Services section of their GBP all the time.
Tell People What You Actually Do
Your business description is a good introduction, but it can only say so much. The Services section gives you room to get specific.
If you’re a marketing consultant, for example, “marketing services” doesn’t tell someone nearly as much as “email marketing,” “website support” or “event promotion.” Think about the individual services a customer might search for or ask you about. Are they listed on your profile?
Google may highlight a listed service when someone searches for it. You can also add a description and, when it makes sense for your business, a price. That gives potential customers a better idea of what you offer before they click through or reach out.
Here’s how to fill it in:
- Open your Google Business Manager and select Edit services.
- Click + Add more services.
- Choose a suggested service or select + Add custom service.
- Enter the service name, then add a short description and a price, if applicable.
- Save and move on to the next one.
Keep the names clear. This is a place for “Website Updates,” not the clever name you gave your website package. You can bring in more personality in the description while still explaining what someone is getting.
And about pricing: you don’t need to squeeze every project into one neat number. If you have a set rate or a useful starting price, consider sharing it. It can help someone decide whether to take the next step. Just keep prices in the service details, where they belong.
Give the Rest of Your Profile a Once-over
Once your services are in place, look at your profile the way a potential customer would. Is it current? Does it sound and look like your business today?
Check the basics first: hours, contact information, website link and service area. Then look at your description and photos. If your services have grown, your team has changed or your work looks different than it did a year ago, your profile should catch up.
Reviews deserve attention, too! Ask happy customers to share their experience and make time to respond. Their words can help someone understand what it’s like to work with you in a way your own description can’t.
A Small Update With a Useful Payoff
Will filling out your Services section magically put you at the top of Google? No. Local results depend on several factors, and there’s no one-button fix for ranking higher.
But complete, accurate details help Google understand your business and help customers understand whether you’re the right fit. That’s reason enough to give your profile some attention.
Start with one service, add a clear description and then add another. A little intentional upkeep can make your GBP much more useful to the people who find it.
